May split the unmanned portfolio into three public facts: Global Hawk IR showed about 50 fighters strung on an Afghan trail on the 2nd, Boeing’s X-45A made the first flight of an unmanned system designed from inception for combat on the 22nd, and the United States updated MTCR-related engine controls that pull small turbojets toward the missile/UAV annex.

## 01. 2 May — Global Hawk IR, “pearls on a necklace”

**Verified record — [Fact — B1]** Air Force Magazine: one IR image snapped over eastern Afghanistan on 2 May clearly showed about 50 enemy fighters on a mountain trail, strung out like pearls on a necklace. **Threat landscape.** A trail march at night is a dynamic target. HALE IR that can count a company-sized file is a strike-cue, not just a map.

**Intelligence assessment.** [Assessment — high confidence] 2 May is the dated image. [Inference — moderate confidence] Cross-cue to Predator/AC-130 is the implied next action, as at Tora Bora. [Uncertainty] Whether a strike followed this specific image was not fetched.

## 02. 22 May — X-45A first flight

**Verified record — [Fact — B1]** CRS RL31872 cites Kim Burger, “US Special Operations To Receive Pointer Unmanned Air Vehicles,” Jane’s Defence Weekly, 15 May 2002: USSOCOM buying hand-launchable UAVs to meet urgent requirements identified in OEF. CRS also records Pointer’s ten-pound / nine-foot / ~90-minute / three-mile character and prior Gulf War and OEF use. ## 04. 20 May Federal Register — MTCR annex engine parameters into the EAR
