May added a one-way UAV to the rocket problem: Hamas launched explosive unmanned aircraft out of Gaza, Iron Dome made its first combat UAV intercept, an F-16 spent a Python-5 on a drone, and Washington chose the same month to disclose the Trump 2017 extra-theater playbook it has already suspended.

## 01. Iron Dome’s first combat UAV intercept

**Verified record — [Fact — B1]** Defense News (Seth J. Frantzman, Jerusalem, 17 May): IDF said Iron Dome intercepted a Hamas drone — a first for the platform. Since 10 May, six drones intercepted by multiple countermeasures. IDF 13 May: “a short while ago, the Iron Dome Aerial Defense System intercepted a UAV belonging to the Hamas terror organization that crossed from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory. The Israeli Air Force monitored the UAV until interception.” 17 May addendum: first UAV intercept by Iron Dome during combat. Rafael and the Defense Ministry would not comment. **Threat landscape.** A rocket-defense battery is now a C-UAS shooter. Trust boundary is the radar/classifier that must tell a low-slow UAV from clutter while a salvo is in the air.

## 02. F-16 Python-5 and “classified means” — mixed C-UAS

**Verified record — [Fact — B2]** Defense News: Israeli media on 13 May reported several drones launched from Gaza; an F-16 with a Python-5 downed one; Iron Dome another; others by “classified means” (Yediot Ahronot). ## 03. Shehab / Ababil-class one-way UAVs enter the rocket war

**Verified record — [Fact — B2]** Defense News: Hamas recently unveiled a video of the Shehab, catapult-launched, preprogrammed route, warhead, “kamikaze”; compared to Iranian Ababil and the Houthi Qasef; September 2019 Iran kamikaze/cruise attack on Saudi oil cited as the family resemblance. ~3,000 rockets since 10 May; Iron Dome >1,000 intercepts, ~90% of those assessed as threats. ## 05. Trump 2017 extra-theater rules are disclosed — and still suspended

**Verified record — [Fact — B1]** NYT (1 May): Biden administration disclosed a set of rules secretly issued by Trump in 2017 for counterterrorism “direct action” (drone strikes and commando raids outside conventional war zones), which the White House has suspended while it weighs tightening. Trump-era commanders had latitude inside “operating principles,” including that civilians “not be injured in the course of operations.” Disclosure followed a Southern District of New York order.
