August put a name on the covert campaign: BBC dated a U.S. missile strike in South Waziristan in the early hours of Wednesday 5 August against the house of Baitullah Mehsud’s father-in-law, with Pakistan’s foreign minister “pretty certain” the TTP leader was dead and the White House still short of confirmation.

**Verified record — [Fact — B1]** BBC News, “Pakistani Taliban leader ‘killed’,” page last updated 05:01 GMT Saturday 8 August 2009: “There are growing indications that Pakistan’s most wanted man, Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud, has been killed by a U.S. missile.” “The missile fired by the U.S. drone hit the home of the Taliban chief’s father-in-law, Malik Ikramuddin, in the Zangarha area, 15km (9 miles) north-east of Ladha, at around 0100 on Wednesday (1900 GMT Tuesday).” Locals told BBC Peshawar he was on the roof; some who said they saw the body described it as half-destroyed; burial in Nardusai. Kafayat Ullah, described as an aide, told AP by telephone Friday that the leader and second wife were killed. Qureshi to BBC: “I think it’s pretty certain now he’s dead.
