**Verified extract — [Fact — B1]** The Los Angeles Times, reporting from Washington, said the FAA had taken “the first concrete step” toward allowing drones to fly alongside passenger airplanes. A law signed by President Obama in February required a plan to integrate unmanned aircraft into national airspace by 2015. In a notice to be published Friday, the FAA sought advice on how to select six test places. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said the sites would help maintain “high safety standards.” The FAA had banned widespread drone use because unmanned planes cannot see other planes. Possible sites named include airspace near the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks (first four-year unmanned-aircraft degree; near Grand Forks AFB, home to Global Hawk and Predator and two CBP Predators) and New Mexico State University in Las Cruces (Pentagon-funded test center on the Mexican border). Proponents envisioned crop-dusting, firefighting, real-estate, movies, and local-police pursuit.
