**Verified extract — [Fact — A1]** Tara McKelvey (Investigative Reporting Workshop) reported Howard “Buck” McKeon (R-Calif.), House Armed Services chairman and co-chair of the Congressional Unmanned Systems Caucus he founded, as a principal political engine of the U.S. drone industry. He had received the most “drone-related campaign contributions” of caucus members — $833,650 — per Hearst/CRP. Boeing, Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin make drones in his district. Obama-era strikes since 2009: about 360 (New America), more than six times Bush. An EFF-released North Dakota flight log showed a drone photographing a meth lab. Drones had been used at the G8 in Northern Ireland and over German train tracks for graffiti. CBP, police and other offices now fly former war drones in the U.S. FAA was looking at civilian airspace; officials expected 10,000 drones by 2020. Virginia was the first state to enact a drone ban; Idaho and Florida followed. AUVSI’s Michael Toscano, in a 2011 North Dakota slide, said UAS sections of the House FAA bill were changed “at the request of AUVSI… often taken word-for-word”; Ben Gielow later said the association made suggestions that were incorporated. McKeon and the caucus helped push the February 2012 FAA Modernization and Reform Act.
