## Executive read

### BLUF

Vorwerk closed Neato Robotics and promised five years of cloud, parts, and repair. That is a support-duration representation, not a brick. No official safety recall graduated this month.

### Key judgments

1. **[Assessment — High confidence]** Vorwerk’s own notice states Neato will be closed, 98 employees worldwide are affected, a 14-person Milan team is retained, and cloud plus spare parts / repair are guaranteed for **at least five years**.
2. **[Assessment — High confidence]** Contemporaneous English-language newsrooms dated the story 1 May 2023. No CPSC, Health Canada, OPSS, or Safety Gate Neato page exists.
3. **[Inference — Moderate confidence]** A five-year cloud promise is the Control Fabric. Whether it is kept is a later Watch item, not a May Fact.

### Analytic labels
- **Fact** — verified reporting or primary record
- **Assessment** — analytic judgment
- **Inference** — reasoned but not directly observed
- **Uncertainty** — unresolved information gap

### Source grades
- **A1** — authoritative primary record / directly confirmed
- **B1–B2** — generally reliable and corroborated
- **C3** — useful but requires caution (typical for forums)

## 01. Vorwerk closes Neato and promises five years of cloud and parts

*Event / publication dates: Vorwerk notice via Presseportal; English-language newsrooms 1 May 2023 (Engadget, TechHive); IEEE Spectrum contemporaneous*

**Product class.** Robot vacuums / mop combos

**Verified record — [Fact — A1 / B1]** Vorwerk Group, 100 percent owner of Neato Robotics since 2017, said independent US-focused sales had not met self-set economic goals and that Neato “will now be closed despite restructuring efforts,” affecting **98** employees worldwide. A **14-person** Milan team is taken over “to ensure the security of the infrastructure for Neato’s cloud services for at least five years.” Spare and consumable parts and repair service are “also guaranteed for at least five years.” Primaries: [Vorwerk via Presseportal](https://www.presseportal.de/pm/52621/5496449), [TechHive](https://www.techhive.com/article/1803382/neato-robotics-is-shutting-down-robot-vacuums.html) (Stefan Watzinger on the record), [Engadget](https://www.engadget.com/robot-vacuum-maker-neato-is-shutting-down-amid-stiff-competition-204959296.html) (1 May 2023), [IEEE Spectrum](https://spectrum.ieee.org/neato-robotics) (quotes the Vorwerk paragraph). TechHive’s 2 May update: Vorwerk said a broken login page had been fixed and was not caused by the shutdown. **No official injury, death, or recall count.** Button-start function is not withdrawn in the May notices.

**Threat landscape.** A cloud-tethered floor robot whose personality and app live on a parent-company promise. The May harm is economic and trust, not fire or crush. The later 6 October 2025 cloud pull is **outside this window** and is not used as a May Fact.

**Forum / community notes.**
- none independently confirmed on this pass. Pre-announcement login / social-account outages were reported in the same newsrooms as color, not as a graduated Fact.

**Intelligence assessment.** [Assessment — High confidence] This is the first 2023 companion-class cloud-support promise on a mass-market robot vac. [Inference — Moderate confidence] Passport must record the five-year sentence as a representation, not as a condition. [Uncertainty] Installed-base size is unpublished in the Vorwerk notice.

**Opportunity.** A dated support-end notice, or a regulator treating the five-year sentence as a warranty representation.

**LRRK relevance.** Control Fabric and Campaign (cloud as the robot). Passport: support-duration disclosure. Watch: whether year five is kept.

**Confidence.** High on the Vorwerk sentences and the 1 May newsroom date. Moderate on the exact calendar day of the German original (Presseportal HTML as opened did not print a dateline). Low on installed base.

## Forward indicators

1. CMA Phase 1 decision (deadline 16 June).
2. Commission notification of Amazon–iRobot.
3. Any CPSC / Health Canada thermal page.
4. Any later notice that shortens the five-year Neato promise.
5. Any named pediatric robotic-mower case.

> **Collection integrity.** CMA invitation to comment closed 3 May; that is a process close, not a decision, and is not a second signal. No May CPSC/Health Canada/OPSS/Safety Gate consumer-robot recall was found. The 2025 Neato cloud-kill is excluded as out of window.

*LRRK — security assurance for systems that sense, move, and act.*
