James Vincent / The Verge, 25 August 2020, quotes Angle: “It’s a lobotomy and replacement of the intelligence systems in all of our robots.” Compatible mapped robots (Roomba i7, i7+, s9, s9+, Braava jet m6) gain machine-vision furniture recognition, suggested “clean zones” and “keep out zones,” recommended schedules, and event-based starts (e.g. August lock / Life360). Training set: “tens of thousands of images from inside employees’ homes”; Angle: data-collecting robots wear “a bright green sticker … so you don’t forget and start wandering around with no pants on”; he “boasts that the company’s fleet of data collecting vehicles is ‘probably second only to Tesla’s.’” Angle on privacy: images “never leave the device and are not even stored for more than a few seconds,” converted to abstract maps; if hacked, “all they’d know is that you have a room called ‘kitchen’ and something in it called a ‘kitchen table.’” Number-one aborted “mission” cause is a human stopping the robot. [Inference — Moderate confidence] “Never leave the device” is a CEO statement, not an independent measurement. [Uncertainty] Whether map-view-on-phone still uploads a processed map (iRobot’s older FAQ path) is not re-tested in the 25 August pieces.

**Opportunity.** An independent image-path test, or a later owner warning on the same i7+ dock family, would bind software claims to hardware risk.

## 02. Care-home robot pets grow bacteria — PLOS ONE / ScienceDaily 26 August

**Verified record — [Fact — B1]** ScienceDaily, 26 August 2020, summarizing Bradwell et al. in *PLOS ONE*: researchers measured microbial load on **eight** robot animals (Paro, Miro, Pleo rb, Joy for All dog, Joy for All cat, Furby Connect, Perfect Petzzz dog, Handmade Hedgehog) after interaction with four care-home residents, and again after cleaning (anti-bacterial spray, brushing fur, wipes). Threshold used: **2.5 CFU/cm²**. After 48-hour incubation, only the Joy for All cat and MiRo stayed below that threshold; the other six ranged **2.56 to 17.28 CFU/cm²**. Post-cleaning loads dropped.
