### BLUF

October split land, air, and undersea: Hunter dropped BAT submunitions at White Sands on the 11th, three REMUS vehicles ran a warm-water minefield accuracy test in Bahrain on 15–24 October, and the 6 October MV *Limburg* attack reopened the maritime-terror file that had begun with *Cole* — a port-security problem UUVs are supposed to help, not a UUV combat first.

## 01. 11 October — Hunter drops BAT at White Sands

**Verified record — [Fact — B1]** CRS RL31872: on 11 October 2002, BATs were successfully dropped from a Hunter UAV at White Sands, striking intended practice targets, a tank and an armored personnel carrier; cites “Hunter UAV Successfully Drops BAT Munitions,” Defense Daily, 16 October 2002. CRS later also records a test hitting and destroying eight of nine targets including armored and soft vehicles. **Threat landscape.** An Army tactical UAV with a self-guided anti-armor submunition is a second U.S. armed-UAV path, not a Predator copy.

## 02. 15–24 October — REMUS in Bahrain, three vehicles, 17 mineshapes

**Verified record — [Fact — A1]** Oceans 2003 paper abstract (McTrusty and Dudinsky, U.S. Navy): three REMUS UUVs taken to Bahrain 15–24 October 2002; objective to measure Probability of Detection/Classification, contact localization accuracy, and internal vehicle temperatures in warm water; 17 mineshapes installed in three minefields in a 1000 m × 1000 m operating area using submeter DGPS; first week install, second week three days testing and two days removal; evaluations by human and computer-aided interpretation. **Threat landscape.** Warm water and a surveyed minefield are the Arabian Gulf rehearsal. Localization error is the difference between a useful cue and a wasted diver hour.

## 03. 6 October — MV Limburg; maritime terror, not a UUV shot

*Event / publication dates: 6 October 2002, off Yemen*

**Verified record — [Fact — B2]** Later official and press accounts (opened in November Yemen-strike coverage) treat *Limburg* as an al-Qaeda maritime attack and name Qaed Salim Sinan al-Harethi as a figure linked to *Cole* and, in some later narratives, to *Limburg*. Contemporaneous October 2002 *Limburg* wires were not separately fetched in full. This signal is the port/MCM problem set, not a claim that REMUS or any UUV responded to *Limburg*. **Threat landscape.** A tanker on fire off Yemen is a maritime-terror and strait-security event. UUVs are a future port-clearance tool, not this month’s responder.

**Intelligence assessment.** [Assessment — moderate confidence] *Limburg* occurred this month and belongs in a kinematic brief as political economy and maritime threat, not as UUV combat. [Inference — moderate confidence] The Yemen hunt that kills al-Harethi on 3 November is already a weeks-long track (ABC, November). [Uncertainty] No October 2002 Navy UUV-response primary was found — and none is invented.

**Opportunity.** After-action on harbor approach survey tools available to coalition navies on 6 October.
