**Verified extract — [Fact — A1]** Spiegel reported, citing its own information, that the first of three leased Israeli Heron 1 reconnaissance drones for the German camp at Kunduz was so badly damaged on 17 March, immediately after its first test flight at a north Afghan airfield, that it was no longer usable. After a successful landing the unmanned aircraft suddenly accelerated again and rammed a German Transall transport; the cause was unclear. The Bundeswehr had ordered three Herons in autumn 2009 on a three-year lease worth 110 million euros from Israel Aerospace Industries (span about 16 metres; live imagery into camp). A ministry paper said Heron 1 capabilities were "unmittelbar zum Schutz der eingesetzten Kräfte" in Kunduz. IAI would supply a replacement because the systems were leased, not bought. The piece also named Luna truck-launched drones (unreliable above 40°C) and the KZO, flying since August out to about 65 km. German pilots had taken six- to eight-week Heron courses in Israel — a first.
