**Verified extract — [Fact — A1]** Chris Rizer of the East Oregonian reported that the National Guard in Pendleton expects to soon launch unmanned air vehicles — commonly known as drones or UAVs — out of the Eastern Oregon Regional Airport to train its 23-troop platoon. City officials are optimistic the new high-tech industry could bring jobs to Pendleton. The National Guard is waiting for FAA approval to fly UAVs at the airport, said Gregg Schroeder, Oregon Army National Guard air traffic and airspace officer. Operating the UAVs would not be restricted to military use. Oregon Fish and Wildlife and the Department of Agriculture could fly UAVs to spot fires, track salmon, locate lost hunters and gather crop moisture information, said Carter Kerns (retired FBI / city commissioner) for City Manager Robb Corbett. BMCC, OSU and Eastern Oregon University could partner to train operators. The airport currently owes $2 million to other city funds. Jump: DRONES/8A.
