**Verified extract — [Fact — A1]** Nikkei Los Angeles correspondent Yoshiko Deshimaru reported that Edwards Air Force Base in eastern California showed a Global Hawk airframe to Japanese press on the 5th — the first such showing. The US military had, in September, deployed the type to Guam for the first time in the western Pacific, intending to strengthen surveillance of the Korean Peninsula and the South China Sea, and hoped for reconnaissance cooperation with Japan. The Defence Ministry was considering a US-made unmanned reconnaissance aircraft; Global Hawk was seen as a leading candidate. The piece said the jet-like airframe flies at about 20,000 metres (almost twice a jetliner), with a camera in the whale-like grey nose covering a radius of just under 100 km, plus radar for weather; about 36 hours' endurance; ground "cockpit" control by mouse and keyboard; airframe-only price about $30 million (about ¥2.5 billion). Northrop Grumman, with Itochu and Sumitomo, was pitching the Japanese government, proposing Iwo Jima as a take-off/landing hub to watch the Korean Peninsula and East China Sea.
