The Air Force names the MQ-9 this month: Reaper. That is a branding and role statement — “the lethal nature of this new weapon system” — not IOC. As of September the Air Force has seven MQ-9s in inventory (program chronology). The access change is linguistic and industrial: the hunter-killer now has a combat name while still in early-fielding, not in combat.
