**Verified extract — [Fact — A1]** BBC reported Yemen's defence ministry saying US-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, a key AQAP figure, had been killed in Khashef, Jawf province, about 140 km east of Sanaa, "along with some of his companions." US and Yemeni officials later named one as Samir Khan, a US citizen of Pakistani origin who produced an online magazine. Local tribal leaders told AFP Awlaki had been moving to evade capture; local people told AP he had been travelling between Jawf and Marib. US officials said Awlaki's convoy was hit by a US drone and jet strike. President Barack Obama said Awlaki had taken "a lead in planning and directing efforts to murder innocent Americans" and that the death was a "milestone"; "This is further proof that al-Qaeda and its affiliates will find no safe haven anywhere in the world." William Hague said Awlaki had "demonstrated his intent and ability to cause mass terror." A US official told ABC there had been "a good opportunity to hit him" on the 10th anniversary of 9/11 that "never materialised." The piece linked him to the 2009 Detroit airliner attempt, 2010 printer-cartridge bombs, Fort Hood and the Times Square plot, and recalled he survived a Shabwa strike and was the target of a 5 May US drone attack that killed two al-Qaeda operatives.
