The agency said Wednesday the sites will supply data so drones can fly in national airspace with manned airplanes. Drones were not allowed except with special FAA permission because remotely piloted aircraft lacked adequate “detect, sense and avoid” technology. The FAA aimed for full integration by 2015. LaHood: unmanned aircraft can help “spotting wildfires” and “assessing natural disasters.” Congress’s FAA reauthorization called for six drone test sites. The FAA asked the public to weigh public versus private management, research activities, operator requirements, and geographic and climate factors.
