**Verified extract — [Fact — A1]** BBC reported Iranian TV showing the first video of an advanced US drone Tehran said it downed 140 miles (225 km) from the Afghan border. Images showed Iranian military officials inspecting an RQ-170 Sentinel that appeared undamaged. US officials acknowledged the loss, saying it had malfunctioned; Iranian officials said forces electronically hijacked the drone and steered it to the ground. Frank Gardner said the intact condition tended to support that claim. Press TV said the army's electronic-warfare unit brought it down on 4 December over Kashmar. Brigadier General Amir-Ali Hajizadeh said the drone "fell into the trap" of the unit "who then managed to land it with minimum damage" and that Iran was "well aware of what priceless technological information" could be gleaned. Nato had said at the weekend operators lost control of an unarmed reconnaissance aircraft over western Afghanistan. Iranian media said Thursday the foreign ministry summoned the Swiss envoy to protest "invasion of a US spy drone deep into its airspace" and demand compensation. The New York Times was cited as saying the stealth drone had been mapping suspected nuclear sites.
