**Verified extract — [Fact — A1]** Guido Olimpio reported from Washington that the Pentagon had announced employment of two unmanned Predator aircraft in Libya, a contribution Defence Secretary Gates called "modesto" under White House limits. Predator and the larger Reaper were treated as relatively low-cost, long-loiter weapons against government vehicles even inside towns. Unmanned aircraft had earned a hunter reputation first in Yemen, then Afghanistan, Iraq and Somalia, used by CIA and the air force against al-Qaeda cadres and bomb-planters — "cecchini del cielo." Images went to a ground station where a pilot and a weapons officer worked eight-hour shifts, often with an intelligence officer; Afghanistan missions were directed from an installation near Las Vegas (Air Force) and one in Britain (CIA). Reapers carry four Hellfires and two laser-guided bombs; Predators Hellfires. Two drones alternating over Misurata would be a continuous threat. Expert and pilot David Cenciotti was quoted: after firing, they can remain to mark targets for fighters, saving four to five sorties. Sandstorms had already caused trouble; the first Libya mission was cancelled for weather. Italy had bought US drones but, "per una decisione incomprensibile," opted for the unarmed reconnaissance version.
