## 01. CPSC 20-115 — Modular Robotics recalls Dexter NiMH packs (burn hazard)

**Verified record — [Fact — A1]** CPSC recall **20-115**, 30 April 2020: Modular Robotics recalls Dexter Industries rechargeable battery packs because they “can short circuit, causing them to overheat, posing a burn hazard.” About **2,400** units. Product: 9.6 V 2000 Ah NiMH, max charge current 2 A, black plastic wrap, white label “Dexter Industries Rechargeable Battery Pack,” sold individually and in Classroom Kits and GoPiGo and BrickPi robotic bundles. Sold online at Dexterindustries.com from March 2018 through January 2020 for about $38. **Four** reports of packs smoking and overheating. **No injuries.** Remedy: stop use, contact Modular Robotics for a free replacement, dispose of the defective pack under local battery law. Manufacturer page, same date: Modular Robotics says packs “have the potential to short circuit, causing them to overheat and posing a potential burn hazard,” offers free replacement, says GoPiGo/BrickPi remain safe on AA cells, and that Cubelets and other Dexter robots are **not** in scope. **Threat landscape.** Thermal / burn on a STEM-kit power source that sits in homes and classrooms — including kits that may now be in storage during COVID closures. No laceration or crush. No injury in the CPSC file.

## 02. iRobot suspends Terra and cuts ~70 jobs — the robotic mower does not launch in 2020

**Product class.** Robotic lawn mowers

**Verified record — [Fact — A1 / B1]** iRobot’s 28 April 2020 Q1 release states that “in conjunction with the workforce reduction, the company has suspended the go-to-market plans for its Terra robot lawnmower,” citing COVID-19 delays and the intensity of planned technology investment. The same cycle: about **70** positions eliminated (~5% of workforce, mostly R&D) and **14** furloughed. Q1 revenue was down versus 2019; e-commerce and premium i7 / s9 / Braava jet m6 demand were described as relatively stronger. ## 03. Embodied launches Moxie — a child companion sold with a subscription and a parent analytics app

(Pasadena; CEO Paolo Pirjanian, former iRobot CTO) announced Moxie, an “animate companion for children” that perceives conversation, eye contact, facial expressions, and “recognize[s] and recall[s] people, places, and things.” Purchase “will include a year’s subscription” covering OTA updates, monthly Mission Packs, a child portal (G.R.L.), and “behavioral analytics via the Embodied Moxie parent app.” Embodied said Moxie and its ecosystem “will be COPPA (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act) Safe Harbor certified” and that PII “can only be decrypted by a unique key that only the parent has access to.” Reservations described as fully refundable.
