## Executive read

### BLUF

November is an aibo-tether month. Sony, 1 November, announces ERS-1000 aibo for Japan: 198,000 yen, on-sale 11 January 2018, and an **aibo Basic Plan** cloud/LTE subscription that is “necessary to utilize aibo.” Jibo’s 7 November public ship date, announced 25 October, is not double-counted. No official consumer-robot recall was located.

### Key judgments

1. **[Assessment — High confidence]** Sony’s 1 November press release is an A1 companion-trust file: the dog does not fully function without a paid cloud plan, and personality is trained in the cloud.
2. **[Assessment — High confidence]** January 2018 ship is out of this window and is not filed as a 2017 fulfillment.
3. **[Assessment — High confidence]** No CPSC, Health Canada, or RAPEX consumer-robot action dated November 2017 was found.

### Analytic labels
- **Fact** — verified reporting or primary record
- **Assessment** — analytic judgment
- **Inference** — reasoned but not directly observed
- **Uncertainty** — unresolved information gap

### Source grades
- **A1** — authoritative primary record / directly confirmed
- **B1–B2** — generally reliable and corroborated
- **C3** — useful but requires caution (typical for forums)

## 01. Sony announces aibo ERS-1000 — cloud subscription required at birth

*Event / publication dates: 1 November 2017 (Sony News Release 17-105E; Reuters same day)*

**Product class.** Robot pets / companion animals; social / desk companions

**Verified record — [Fact — A1]** Sony Corporation, Tokyo, 1 November 2017: entertainment robot “aibo,” model **ERS-1000**, Sony Store price **198,000 JPY** (tax not included), **release date 11 January 2018**, Japan only at announcement. Pre-orders from 23:01 on 1 November via Sony Store; limited numbers. Twenty-two axes; two OLED eyes; front camera plus SLAM camera; LTE + Wi-Fi; about 2.2 kg; about two-hour battery. [Sony](https://www.sony.com/en/SonyInfo/News/Press/201711/17-105E/). Reuters, 1 November: sales begin in Japan in January at 198,000 yen; prior AIBO run about 150,000 units before production ceased. [Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/article/technology/sony-revives-pet-ai-project-with-updated-aibo-robot-dog-idUSKBN1D13M0/).

**aibo Basic Plan is required.** Sony: “An aibo Basic Plan subscription is necessary to utilize aibo.” Three-year plan 90,000 JPY one-time or 2,980 JPY/month × 36. The plan is what lets aibo “access information stored in the cloud to grow and learn,” use My aibo (photos, store), and have data “periodically… backed up in the cloud,” with a planned future restore onto a new body. “With its owners’ permission, aibo can collect data from these interactions, then connect to the cloud and access the knowledge accumulated from interactions between different owners and their aibo.” Optional aibo Support Care is a repair-discount plan, not the tether.

**Injuries/deaths:** none. This is a companion-trust file. The 2018 ship is not claimed as a November fulfillment.

**Threat landscape.** A kinematic pet whose personality and backup live on a paid cloud from day one. The 2014 AIBO support cutoff is outside this decade window and is background only. Physical harm named is none. The trust failure, if the plan or the company dies, is a bricked dog — that failure is not a 2017 event.

**Forum / community notes.**
- none found.

**Intelligence assessment.** [Assessment — High confidence] The tether is disclosed in the launch release, not discovered after the fact. [Inference — Moderate confidence] “Necessary to utilize aibo” is a clearer continuity risk than Jibo’s implicit US-server dependency. [Uncertainty] Take-up of the 1 November pre-order is unpublished this month.

**Opportunity.** 11 January 2018 first-ship confirmation, and any Japan regulator or ToS file on the Basic Plan. Do not pre-write those as 2017 Facts.

**LRRK relevance.** Control Fabric and Campaign (cloud as the pet). Passport: mandatory subscription as a trust instrument. Watch: ERS-1000 / Basic Plan — ship is 2018.

**Confidence.** High on the Sony text, the price, the 11 January 2018 date, and the “necessary to utilize” sentence. Low on 2017 pre-order volume.

## Forward indicators

1. 11 January 2018 aibo first ship — out of year; do not file it here.
2. Kuri holiday-2017 fulfillment.
3. IEC / EN robotic-mower standard activity.
4. Any 2017 official consumer-robot recall — still NIL through November.
5. Any brand-named robotic-mower pediatric case.

> **Collection integrity.** One signal. Jibo 7 November public ship is the date announced 25 October and is not given a second number. No opened 7 November “units left the dock today” primary. **Killed:** Jibo funeral (March 2019); Vector; Anki shutdown; iRobot sold maps; Roomba CPSC recall; named mower fatality; Pertisau. Forum empty. Official IDs: **NIL**.
